Michel Nykjaer loses WTCC drive with Nika due to financial reasons

Michel Nykjaer will miss the remainder of the 2013 World Touring Car Championship campaign due to financial reasons

Nykjaer, currently in third position in the standings, returned to the WTCC this year, driving Nika Racing's Chevrolet Cruze.

Danish driver Nykjaer has enjoyed his strongest season in the WTCC so far, having scored three wins and six podiums.

He is also leading the Yokohama trophy standings with the same amount of points as James Nash.

On Wednesday, however, the Dane said he has lost his seat to a driver to be announced on Thursday, according to the team.

"It's been my best year in [the WTCC], but sadly it ends here," Nykjaer wrote on Twitter.

"Due to financial reasons Nika found another driver... And the rest is silence."

Team boss Nicklas Karlsson added: "Of course it is always sad when such a situation arises, but we have already achieved more than most thought possible this season.

"As a competitive person, I'd have preferred to have been able to complete the season with Michel and continued to challenge for second place, but as team boss it is also my mission to look at the interests of the team in the long term.

"In our joint project with Michel it has unfortunately proved difficult to find a suitable form of financing."

Karlsson said he was not ruling out a return for Nykjaer in the future should the conditions allow it.
