Michel Nykjaer returns to the WTCC for Curitiba round
Michel Nykjaer will return to the World Touring Car Championship at Curitiba this weekend with the Bamboo Engineering Chevrolet squad
The 32-year-old Dane replaces regular driver Pasquale di Sabatino, who has not fully recovered from a serious dose of bronchitis and pneumonia last month. The Italian has been ordered not to fly by doctors.
Bamboo team principal Richard Coleman said: "We're all very disappointed that Pasquale is unable to drive this weekend. We are sure he is going to be fit in time for [the next round in] America, and we thank his sponsors for their patience throughout his illness.
"The whole team wish him the very best and look forward to having him back with us soon. We are delighted to have been able to secure the services of Michel at such short notice. He's a very highly-respected driver and has experience with the Cruze so he's the perfect replacement and we are confident we can have a good weekend."
Nykjaer spent the past two seasons racing in the WTCC, finishing second in the independents' standings last year and 10th overall. This year he has switched back to the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship with the works Chevrolet squad. He currently lies third in that series.
