VW never lost faith in Jari-Matti Latvala, says boss Jost Capito
Volkswagen boss Jost Capito says his team never lost faith in Jari-Matti Latvala as he struggled prior to last weekend's Acropolis Rally win
Latvala was left trailing as his team-mate Sebastien Ogier blasted to three early-season victories and a large points lead.
But the Finn's win in Greece broke Ogier and Sebastien Loeb's stranglehold on the 2013 World Rally Championship and elevated him to second in the points.
Latvala emulates McRae's breakthrough
Asked if the victory proved Latvala was the right choice for VW, Capito replied: "I have never felt otherwise since he joined the team.
"I've known him for eight years and he is absolutely the right driver - this was never in doubt. It's more than fair that he got his win."
Capito said he had always expected ex-Ford driver Latvala would require different support to Ogier.
"We knew with Jari-Matti it would be different. He came here to a new team, a different team from the one he had been with for a long time," Capito said.
"But I worked with him at Ford and I knew that, at times, he would need the arm around the shoulder. He is a different guy from Ogier and it takes a different way to get the best out of both the drivers.
"But what Jari-Matti did [in Greece] was a very, very good result. Now we are seeing the best of him.
"He knows the car and he knows the team and he feels comfortable with them both."
Ogier added that he was not surprised to see Latvala back on top.
"I knew from when we started this season that he would be one of my main rivals," said the Frenchman.
