Too early for title talk says Makinen
Tommi Makinen took a dominant win on the Safari Rally to join Calos Sainz, Colin McRae and Juha Kankkunen at the top of the all-time win list on 23 WRC victories and also take a 10-point lead in the drivers' championship - but the flying Finn insists it is still much too early to talk about winning his fifth title
Makinen led the African event almost from the very beginning and while championship rivals Colin McRae and Carlos Sainz fell foul to mechanical problems on the first and second legs, the Mitsubishi ace kept his cool out front.
The gruelling rally covers the equivalent of an entire European event on each leg, but despite the long desert sections, Makinen says he always felt in control.
"We knew after the pre-event test that the car and tyre package was strong," he said. "We didn't have to think about any problems or punctures. I can't say it was easy, but it always felt like it was under control."
The win takes Makinen's points to 40 and hands the him the championship lead. McRae is left stranded in second place on 30 and Sainz just behind on 26. But with six rounds of the calendar still to run, Makinen refuses to be drawn on his title hopes.
"It's too early to talk about the title," he said, "but of course 10 points is useful."
The 37-year-old was also asked who he thought would be the first to move ahead in the overall victory tally from himself and his two Ford rivals Sainz and McRae. Makinen confidently replied: "It's Finland next..."
