Too early for title talk says Makinen

Tommi Makinen took a dominant win on the Safari Rally to join Calos Sainz, Colin McRae and Juha Kankkunen at the top of the all-time win list on 23 WRC victories and also take a 10-point lead in the drivers' championship - but the flying Finn insists it is still much too early to talk about winning his fifth title

Makinen led the African event almost from the very beginning and while championship rivals Colin McRae and Carlos Sainz fell foul to mechanical problems on the first and second legs, the Mitsubishi ace kept his cool out front.

"It's too early to talk about the title," he said, "but of course 10 points is useful."

The 37-year-old was also asked who he thought would be the first to move ahead in the overall victory tally from himself and his two Ford rivals Sainz and McRae. Makinen confidently replied: "It's Finland next..."
