Subaru takes action on brakes

The Subaru World Rally Team flew in extra braking system components prior to day two of the Monte Carlo Rally in a bid to solve the still unexplained problems that afflicted Petter Solberg and Stephane Sarrazin on leg one

Solberg nearly crashed out of the event on the opening stage after his brakes faded without warning. The problem continued throughout Friday's stages, but the drivers were happier after SS5 this morning.

Team boss David Lapworth admitted that he still had no idea what had caused the problem, having found nothing specific wrong with the braking components removed during yesterday's stages. The emergency delivery of brake parts was required simply because they had to change the brakes so often during leg one.

"We flew in brake pads, fluids, calipers and other parts, but it was basically because we had used more than we'd expected and we didn't want to run out," he said.

Both Solberg and Sarrazin were content with their Imprezas' braking performance on SS5, although the latter lost nearly a minute after two driving errors. Solberg dropped behind Toni Gardemeister to fifth this morning, but the team was happy to note that Petter was the fastest Pirelli runner on SS5. Unlike fellow Pirelli users Peugeot, Subaru are still using their 2004-specification car.
