SS23, Fyfe 1: McRae spins
Petter Solberg took his third stage win of the final day on SS23, but a spin for the charging Colin McRae has, barring any major mishaps, handed Richard Burns his first win of 2001 in New Zealand
McRae has spent much of the final leg trying to catch Subaru rival Burns, but the Scot was perhaps trying a bit too hard on the penultimate stage of the event and he spun his Focus WRC and stalled the engine, costing him just over half a minute.
Burns' lead now stands at just under 50 seconds and the British ace has 10.6km between him and victory.
Solberg was fastest on the Fyfe stage, but Marcus Gronholm was only 0.4s behind the Norwegian in second place. Didier Auriol came home third in the second Peugeot while Harri Rovanpera was sixth in the third works 206 WRC.
The battle for third is as close as ever with Carlos Sainz, who was equal fourth fastest on SS23 with Tommi Makinen, currently occupying the third spot overall, with Gronholm 3.9s behind and Rovanpera only 1.9s behind him.
