SS22, Mari 2: Burns wins battle, McRae wins war
Richard Burns made absolutely sure of second place in the Cyprus Rally with a win on the last stage, the 7.07km SS22, Mari 2. But there was nothing he could do about Colin McRae's overall lead. The Scot put in a measured run through the stage, 3.8s slower than Burns to keep a full 16.4s rally-winning margin
Carlos Sainz's last ditch bid to snatch second place from Burns foundered when the Ford Focus picked up two punctures on Mari 2. Nonetheless the Spaniard was second quickest on the stage, 3.4s slower than Burns. Sainz has to be content with third place overall.
Freddy Loix took fifth fastest time on the stage for Mitsubishi, and the Belgian is fifth overall, behind the impressive Subaru driver Toshi Arai, who was sixth fastest on Mari 2.
Pasi Hagstroem won the privateers' class - the FIA Teams Cup - and finished an impressive sixth overall, ahead of Alister McRae's works Hyundai and both factory Skodas.
McRae completed a fighting final leg with fourth fastest time over Mari 2, but Hagstroem's eighth place was easily good enough to keep Alister down in seventh place overall.
Skoda twins Bruno Thiry and Armin Schwarz were seventh and ninth on the stage respectively and eighth and ninth overall.
