SS14, Amfiklia 1: Burns on the move

Richard Burns proved he means business by taking two seconds off Acropolis Rally leader Colin McRae in just the 8.25km that made up the opening stage of the third and final leg, SS14 Amfiklia 1

Subaru ace Burns was 14.8s behind the Scot's Ford Focus at the end of leg two, but believed that starting third on the road, thus allowing McRae and his Ford team mate, the second-placed Carlos Sainz, to road-sweep on the rocky and dusty stages, would pave the way to victory. On this form, he could be right.

SS14 was the shortest stage of the day and on SS15, for instance, he has a whopping 38.69km to whittle away at McRae's advantage.

McRae was second fastest on the stage, with Sainz third, 2.8s behind the flying Burns.

With a minute to fourth-placed Petter Solberg, these three are the only real candidates for victory, but the Norwegian Subaru young gun will be looking to protect his 13s lead over Finland's Harri Rovanpera in the sole surviving works Peugeot. On SS14, Solberg was just 0.1s faster than Rovanpera, with Tommi Makinen 0.7s further back.

Amfiklia, like the 38km Elatia-Rengini, will be used twice, but should prove less of an advantage to Burns after being cleaned on the first run through. Burns knows he must maximise his advantage by charging hardest on the first run throughs.
