Safari Rally results stand

The results of the Safari Rally will stand after event stewards threw out a protest from the Ford World Rally team that the runner-up, Peugeot's Harri Rovanpera, had entered a time control more than once

Ford maintained that Rovanpera was given a time at the end of the third competitive section, then turned his car around and re-entered the time control when he and his co-driver decided the time was not correct.

Under the WRC's sporting regulations, entering a time control more than once is an offence punishable by exclusion.

Minutes before, Colin McRae's Ford Focus had knocked over the time control marshals' table as it suffered from damaged steering and clutch problems. The incident led to a certain amount of confusion within the time control, during which Rovanpera was given his initial time.

However, in a meeting after the event, the stewards decided to reject Ford's protest and allow the results to stand.

Rovanpera finished second behind Tommi Makinen in a Finnish one-two and has now moved to fourth overall in the standings.
