Rally Australia battle threatens to get dirty
Western Australia Tourism minister Norman Moore has threatened to start playing dirty if he feels that rival state Victoria has gone behind his back to steal Telstra Rally Australia from Perth next year
An announcement that the event will move to Melbourne following a coup by the Australian GP organising team is expected soon, but Moore says he'll fight to the end to keep the event on the west coast.
"We believe we have a watertight contract with the Confederation of Australian Motor Sports (CAMS) which requires us to run the event in Perth. We're not going to take this lying down and of there are dirty tricks being played then we'll respond accordingly," he told local reporters on Friday.
However, Moore's statement may prove to be too late. Although the Victoria government offices refused to admit that Melbourne had bid for the event a spokesman said: "I can't confirm anything as we haven't yet secured it."
However, other sources close to Victoria premier Steve Brack's office have suggested that the deal is very much done and will be confirmed early next week, most likely on Tuesday.
