Mitsubishi to build WRC car

Marlboro Mitsubishi Ralliart chief engineer Bernard Lindauer said in Cyprus that the Rugby-based team is expecting that the next generation Lancer will be a World Rally Car.

Mitsubishi to build WRC car

To date there have been seven Group A versions of the saloon car but Mitsubishi has always shunned the step towards the WRC formula (introduced for the 1997 season) as it is not possible to build a Group N version.

The production car formula is an area where Mitsubishi is traditionally strong and to lose a major part of its competition base would be hard to accept.

Group A demands that 2500 cars be built to a high-performance specification and Mitsubishi has been one of the few teams able to sell these cars as fast as they are produced.

Other teams have entered the World Rally Championship through the World Rally Car formula that allows them to take a basic family car and use a kit of off the shelf parts to create a rally winner.

Mitsubishi has always felt that its Group A cars were fast enough to be competitive against the WRC specials but recently this has not been the case. Lindauer said in Cyprus, "We've looked very hard at the times being set by the World Rally Cars and we have decided that the time is right to build one for ourselves. We would expect that the new car will make its debut sometime next year."
