McRae tries Dakar car
Colin McRae drove a Nissan Pickup for the first time earlier this week, ahead of his competitive début for the team on January's Dakar Rally
The 35-year-old ran the 2003-spec car for a day in sand dunes north of Cape Town in South Africa, said a story in AUTOSPORT Magazine.
"It was very good. I was happy at the end of the test," said McRae. "It was just a familiarisation run for me. The team wanted to see what it was like driving the car in the sand - from that perspective it was really useful.
"It took me about half a day before I could start to read the sand and know where to go and where not to go. Digging the car out when we got stuck was pretty hard work.
"It was kind of what I expected, so I am still looking forward to the event."
McRae is strongly tipped to replace Richard Burns at Subaru in the World Rally Championship next year, but this should not interfere with his Dakar commitment.
