Loeb eager to clinch title in Japan
Sebastien Loeb says he wants to wrap up the 2008 World Rally Championship title in Japan next weekend even though he only has to get six points from the final two rounds
The four-times champion is currently 14 points ahead of Mikko Hirvonen with only the Rally Japan and Rally GB remaining, so will clinch a record fifth consecutive title if he finishes on the podium in Japan.
Loeb, who has won 10 of the 13 rallies held so far this year, said he wants to get the championship out of the way as early as possible so he can push for victory in Britain.
"We are aware of how competitive our C4 is, and we will still have the Wales Rally GB to come afterwards," said the Citroen driver.
"That takes away some of the pressure, but our objective will be to try to sew up the championship in Japan.
"I would like to wrap up the title in Japan so that we can focus our attention on winning when we go to Wales."
He said he is willing to take a cautious approach to the Japanese event and to drive for the title rather than the rally win.
"If our rivals win, we will need to come away with at least six points. That means finishing in third place and we will start with that in mind and see how things unfold," said Loeb.
"We will always have the possibility of adjusting our pace to ensure we stay concentrated and don't make any mistakes."
The Rally Japan has moved to a new location around Sapporo this year so the stages are all completely new.
"Contesting a new event with the title at stake only adds to the stress, although it's not the first time we have faced this situation," said Loeb.
