Loeb denies Volkswagen link

Sebastien Loeb has denied any contact with Volkswagen regarding the German firm's much talked about WRC programme

Recent speculation hinted that Loeb, the World Rally Championship's most successful driver ever, had already engaged in early discussions regarding a switch from Citroen to VW for 2012 - with figures of up to €15m for next season talked about.

"No," said Loeb. "I have not spoken to VW about next year. I don't know if I will be driving next year."

Loeb has driven for Citroen since 2001, taking all of his titles and his 63 world rally wins with the French firm. He briefly considered a switch to Ford in 2004, but otherwise he has remained loyal to the Versailles-based manufacturer.

Citroen team principal Olivier Quesnel hopes Sebastien Loeb will stay on in the team for another season next year. Loeb's current agreement with Citroen expires at the end of this year.

Quesnel said: "I don't think he knows what he will be doing next year. It's too early for himself to decide. He knows, of course, he can stay with Citroen. Maybe he will stop, maybe he will go to endurance racing and maybe, why not?

"He will go to Volkswagen, but honestly, I don't know. I can't tell you anything about that, but you can be sure that he doesn't know himself. But, of course, he is always welcome with Citroen."
