Gronholm aims for asphalt win

Marcus Gronholm is pinning his WRC title hopes on taking victory on the asphalt roads of Sanremo next month, and is hoping that lessons learned from circuit racing techniques will boost his performance on sealed surfaces

Gronholm aims for asphalt win

Gronholm has never won a rally on asphalt before but he is going to test on a racing circuit, which he hopes will help him score a win in Italy and keep his championship aspirations alive. Three of the final four rounds of the championship are run on asphalt.

"I am going to try something I have never tried before," said Gronholm. "I am going out to a circuit to try out different braking points and different lines. I need to know where I am making time and where I am losing time. The problem has been that I don't really know where that is happening - it is always a bit of an adventure."

After retiring from the last round in Australia, Gronholm thought his title chances were over. However, now he says he has not given up on retaining his crown.
"I really need to win now. Australia was very disappointing for me, but I have absolutely not given up. Of all the tarmac rallies I think Sanremo is probably my best chance. I don't really know why but I seem to go well there."
