CS8: Sainz and Makinen retire
Carlos Sainz and Tommi Makinen's hopes of scoring points on the Safari Rally have both bitten the dust on the same stage, as Colin McRae continues to lead the Kenyan event on the second day

Sainz was lying in third place when he suffered an oil leak on the 81km Kerrerie-Seyabei stage. The engine in his Ford Focus finally ran out of oil 46km into the test.
Makinen was put out of his misery by front left suspension damage after 30km. He was already a dispirited fifth, having lost the lead at the start of the day with a broken shock absorber, followed by a puncture on the next stage.
The order at the top of the leaderboard remains the same, with McRae well ahead of Harri Rovanpera. Markko Martin jumps up to third in his Ford, Thomas Radstrom is fourth for Citroen and reigning world champion Richard Burns enters the points for the first time in fifth.
Sebastien Loeb is sixth, giving Citroen a chance of a double points score on its first Safari Rally appearance.
