Andersson warns he will need time
P-G Andersson has warned that it might take him time to show his full potential when he joins Stobart Ford for Rally Bulgaria in July
Stobart confirmed this afternoon that double Junior champion and former Suzuki works driver Andersson would be drafted into its line-up for Bulgaria, as revealed by AUTOSPORT earlier today.
Since Suzuki pulled out of the World Rally Championship, Andersson has had to settle for occasional drives in private WRC machinery and outings in the lower classes. But his Stobart drive in Bulgaria is arguably his best opportunity in a competitive WRC car yet.
While Andersson won on asphalt in the Junior series, he cautioned that he was not as confident of success in Bulgaria as he would be if he was joining Stobart for a gravel rally.
"I had my first test in the Focus two weeks ago on a gravel surface and everything went very smoothly," said Andersson.
"My only concern is that the stages in Bulgaria are tarmac and these are not my preference so it may take a bit of time to get used to the car on a new surface. I'm sure it will all be fine though and I am very excited about joining the team."
Stobart Ford team principal Malcolm Wilson said Andersson had already made a big impact on the squad.
"We were really impressed with the feedback we received when he competed in a Ford Fiesta R2 in the Pirelli International Rally last month and I am sure that he will do just as well in a WRC round," said Wilson.
"He also performed very well in the test a few weeks ago - I have no doubt that he will be a great representative for our team."
