Sebastien Ogier will take a 20-second lead into the final day of Rally GB after a brief charge from Jari-Matti Latvala faded.
Just as Ogier appeared to have the rally under control, his Volkswagen team-mate reduced his lead from 25s to 17s on the Dyfnant stage, where the Finn grew in confidence while Ogier took it a little too easy.
But rather than capitalising on those gains, Latvala made a mistake on the asphalt Chirk Castle spectator stage that followed, losing four seconds.
He will begin Sunday 20.3s adrift overall.
The battle for third continued to get closer through the afternoon.
Thierry Neuville remained adamant that he had everything in hand, but his lead over Andreas Mikkelsen is down to 20s, while Neuville's M-Sport Ford team-mate Mads Ostberg raised his pace and got back within 7.3s of Mikkelsen.
