The 2014 World Rallycross Championship will stage a round at the former Turkish Grand Prix-hosting Istanbul Park circuit, as one of five new venues for next season

Wednesday's meeting of the FIA World Motor Sport Council also revealed that events in Belgium, Canada, Italy and Argentina join the schedule as the European series evolves into a world championship.

The 12-round calendar features nine events in Europe, with famous Canadian circuit Trois-Rivieres one of the three flyaways.

The switch to a world championship also includes the introduction of a teams' championship to run alongside the drivers' title.

FIA president Jean Todt said: "The launch of the new FIA World Rallycross Championship will allow this fantastic sport to grow and develop outside of its traditional base in Europe.

"The exciting line-up of races for 2014 will bring rallycross to a new generation of fans around the world."

Championship managing director Martin Anayi added: "Achieving FIA World Championship status was a huge step in the development of the sport.

"Today's approval of the calendar for 2014, which sees us operate across four continents, proves its growing presence on the international motorsport scene."

The European Rallycross Championship will continue to run alongside the world championship, and take place at five of the European based events (Great Britain, Norway, Belgium, Germany and Italy).

Permanent world championship drivers will not be eligible to score points in the European championship.
