Greinbach European Rallycross: Alexander Hvaal claims first win

Alexander Hvaal claimed his first Supercar win with victory in the eighth round of the European Rallycross Championship in Austria

Liam Doran and Petter Solberg shared the front row of the grid and it was the former who led into Turn 1, while Solberg was left on the grid with a problem.

Hvaal followed Doran into the first corner, ahead of championship leader Timur Timerzyanov.

Stig-Olav Walfridsson ran fourth on lap one, only to be passed by French driver Davy Jeanney on the loose section.

Doran led while Timerzyanov was first to take his joker lap on the second tour, coming out in front of Jeanney.

Doran looked to have the race in the bag, but halfway around the fourth lap flames burst from his Citroen DS3, bringing it to a halt.

Hvaal passed the leader and immediately took his joker, returning to the main circuit in the lead ahead of team-mate Timerzyanov, where he stayed until the finish.

Jeanney completed the podium, with Walfridsson scoring his best result of the season in fourth.

"I'm lost for words. This is my first win in Supercar. Last year went so well but this year has been terrible. Now we have shown the pace we really have," said Hvaal.

Tord Linnerud had initially qualified for the final but was excluded from his semi-final for aggressive driving, handing his place on the grid to Jeanney.

Latvian driver Reinis Nitiss won the Super1600 category for the fifth time this season and in doing so claimed the title. Ulrik Linnemann finished second, with Ildar Rakhmatullin third.

Like Nitiss, Irishman Derek Tohill took maximum points from Austria to win the TouringCar category for a second time, with one event to go. He beat Robin Larsson and title rival Roman Castoral.
