Tyre Problem Costs McNish

Tyre delamination cost Allan McNish any chance of challenging Tom Kristensen for victory at Le Mans, Autosport-Atlas can reveal

The Scot left the circuit at the Indianapolis corner at speed and hit the tyre wall, causing damage to the front right suspension and front bodywork. The pit stop to repair the damage took 18 minutes to complete.

"The belt had come off," McNish told Autosport-Atlas. "The two rights at Mulsanne and Indianapolis weren't a problem but I couldn't turn left. I had a lock up at the second chicane on the Mulsanne and after that it went. It was the in-lap as well, so I am not very happy."

The Scot had been chasing the leading Audi of Tom Kristensen when he went off. "It was as good as it was going to get. I couldn't compete with Tom and his new tyre times, but considering the tyres were three stints old it wasn't too bad. We will have to try to get third, and wait to see what the Pescarolo does. That has run faultlessly since it left the garage."
