Risks pay off for Sarrazin

Stephane Sarrazin has admitted that he took major risks in his efforts to put Peugeot on provisional pole at Le Mans during the opening evening of qualifying last night

Sarrazin soared to the top of the sheets with his very last lap, and said afterwards that he threw everything he had into it.

"I took a lot of risks at the very end, even when overtaking the slower cars," he said.

"So much so, in fact, that I forgot to turn for one corner and I found myself driving across a gravel trap! But it was great fun and the team did a fantastic job.

"The biggest difficulty was finding a clear lap, and I'm glad to say that I succeeded in finding a traffic-free slot at the very end."

Sarrazin's problems in traffic were shared by Nicolas Minassian in the other Peugeot. Minassian was quickest in the first two sectors on his final lap, but faded at the end because of backmarkers.

"Tonight was all about finding a clear lap at the very end, but I seemed to come across traffic every time," he said.

"OK, there's still another session to come and we will try to improve our position if we see an opportunity, but there is a busy programme of work to get through to finish our preparations for the race."
