Risi Ferrari team recalls Matteo Malucelli for Le Mans 24 Hours

Italian Matteo Malucelli has been recalled to the Risi Ferrari squad for the Le Mans 24 Hours next month, more than two years after being dropped by the US team

The 31-year-old will race the Risi Competizione Ferrari 488 GTE at Le Mans on June 18/19 alongside factory drivers Giancarlo Fisichella and Toni Vilander, its regular pairing in the IMSA SportsCar Championship.

Malucelli drove for Risi in the 2013 American Le Mans Series, taking one GT class win together with Olivier Beretta, and then contested the Daytona and Sebring enduros at the start of the following year's United SportsCar Championship.

The Italian was suspended from round three in Long Beach for causing an accident when he rejoined the track after a spin in the Sebring 12 Hours the previous month and did not return to the team's line-up.

Team owner Giuseppe Risi, whose team took GT2 class honours in the 24 Hours in 2008-09, said: "With the tough competition we expect this year, having proficient Ferrari drivers is the only way to compete.

"Between our team's history at Le Mans and that of our drivers, we have a great deal of experience and hope to parlay that into success."

Malucelli said that he had "some business to finish in a Risi Ferrari".

"This is a great team with good Ferrari drivers and I'm very happy to be part of it," he continued.

The factory AF Corse squad has yet to reveal the additional drivers for its pair of 488s at Le Mans.

The deadline for nominating drivers is this week.
