Porsche adds Estre to World Endurance Championship GTE line-up

Kevin Estre has joined Porsche's World Endurance Championship GTE Pro line-up for 2017, in the seat that was earmarked for new recruit Gianmaria Bruni

Porsche has signed Bruni from Ferrari, but the terms of his early exit preclude him from racing in WEC this season, with the Italian's 2017 programme limited to the USA and a July start date.

That means Estre will partner Michael Christensen in the #92 Porsche 911 RSR, with Richard Lietz and Fred Makowiecki in the #91 car.

A German and French Carrera Cup champion, Estre was a McLaren GT regular for two seasons, before joining Porsche as a factory driver last year.

"In the fight for the maiden GT World Championship title in the FIA WEC we've put together two strong driver pairings," Porsche's head of motorsport Dr Frank-Steffen Walliser said.

"And all four pilots come from the world's best GT hotbed of talent, Porsche's one-make race series."

Estre had previously been announced in Porsche's IMSA SportsCar Championship line-up, alongside Audi convert Laurens Vanthoor.

His new WEC role leaves uncertainty around Porsche's plans for reigning WEC LMP1 champion Romain Dumas and junior Sven Mueller, with the pair considered the leading candidates for the final GTE drive.

Mueller has, though, secured a Super GT drive with D'Station Racing in recent days.
