Kristensen Surprised by Victory

Tom Kristensen didn't believe he could take his historic seventh Le Mans victory going into this year's event

The Dane feared that with the restrictions placed on the Audi this year, his Champion Racing R8 might not be able to overcome the pace of the Pescarolo Sport cars.

"You always believe you can do it but you take nothing for granted," Kristensen said. "You are as confident you can be but you never think about it to the end. Even thought I had an Audi R8.

"We had slow punctures and in the morning I jumped into early, having just woken up. We had a great fight with the other Audi of Allan McNish and we were really pushed."

Kristensen was in the car as it crossed the line, having completed a marathon three and a half hour stint.

"I often get asked which is my greatest victory but I always reply the same," he added. "Without the first one, the rest wouldn't have come. But if you ask me which one I remember the best, well, it was this one."
