James Calado set to race for Ferrari in 2014 WEC

GP2 frontrunner James Calado is set to race for Ferrari in this year's World Endurance Championship

The Briton, who finished third in last year's GP2 points with ART, is understood to be close to securing a deal to race for the factory AF Corse team in the GTE Pro class of the WEC after a successful test at Vallelunga earlier this month.

Calado, 24, tested alongside fellow GP2 race winner Sam Bird, while Jerome d'Ambrosio is also known to have tried out for the AF Corse drive left open by Kamui Kobayashi's return to Formula 1 with Caterham.

AF Corse boss Amato Ferrari stated that Calado did a good job in the test and said that it was "90 per cent" certain who would take the vacant seat.

But he would not confirm the name of the driver ahead of an official announcement of AF's line-up due later this week.

Calado was also unable to comment on his chances of a deal with Ferrari and AF.

Team owner Ferrari did confirm that Gianmaria Bruni and Toni Vilander will be paired together in the lead Ferrari 458 Italia and that the final signing will share the second car with Davide Rigon.

It is unclear whether Calado, who is part of Nicolas Todt's management stable, will be announced as a full Ferrari factory driver in the same way that Kobayashi was.

Ferrari is traditionally secretive about the contracts it has with its GT drivers and also has different levels of factory affiliation.

Calado made five Formula 1 free practice outings with Force India last year, but his 2014 programme with the team is likely to only consist of simulator work.
