Fittipaldi promises to return
Former Formula One and Champ Car driver Christian Fittipaldi has promised to return to Le Mans, after describing the track as the best he has ever raced on during his debut with the ACEMCO Saleen, which is currently running fifth in the GT1 class
The Brazilian, who has raced is virtually every discipline of track racing, including Formula One, Champ Cars, NASCAR and GrandAm, said that he badly regretted having waited until he was 35 to make his first attempt at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
"I'm kicking myself that I've missed 15 years of racing here," he told autosport.com. "It's pretty quick out there and you need to be on it. Especially in the dark and everything.
"Even in my car, which is not the fastest on the straightaway, even in the GT cars you are going down the straightaway 300km.
"Over here the track is absolutely phenomenal and this will be the first of many visits for me."
Fittipaldi, who is teamed with Terry Borcheller and Johnny Mowlem, admitted that the No.66 ACEMCO car was not on the pace of the factory Astons and Corvettes but that it had not diminished his enthusiasm for this weekend's race.
"It's pretty much a lonely race," he said. "It's not like the 24 Hours of Daytona or something like that where the cars all run together a lot of the time.
"We were running third for the first two hours of the race and then we lost our rear bumper, then we lost a front upright and that cost us about 30 minutes so we are not even talking half distance yet."
