British Audi to contest French classic
Audi Sport UK will enter one of the all-conquering R8 sports prototypes in next year's Le Mans 24 Hours
The British importer has purchased a 2002-specification Audi R8 from Audi Sport that will be prepared by Arena Motorsport for the annual French endurance classic on June 14-15. The R8 has won the Le Mans 24 Hours and the American Le Mans Series for the past three years.
The UK-entered car will also contest the Sebring 12 Hours in Florida on March 15 - the opening round of the 2003 ALMS. No drivers have yet been selected for the two-race programme.
Arena previously prepared the 2000-spec Gulf Audi R8 of Stefan Johansson in selected American and European Le Mans Series in 2001. A win and a second place earned Johansson and Audi the LMP900 Drivers' and Chassis/Engine Manufacturers' 2001 ELMS titles respectively.
AUDI AG has restructured its motorsport programme for 2003 which means that the Ingolstadt-based Audi Sport department will support customer teams only next year, rather than its ultra-successful works Joest squad.
