AUTOSPORT joins Le Mans vote jury
AUTOSPORT has been honoured with a seat on the jury that will pick the car that best embodies the legend of the Le Mans 24 Hours from each of the 10 decades of the race
The Automobile Club de l'Ouest, which runs the 24 Hours, launched in December 'Vote for a Legend' to help celebrate the 90th anniversary of the race in 2013.
Sportscar fans were invited to cast their votes for a favourite car from each decade and the special jury will tomorrow draw up the definitive list.
The 12-man panel includes multiple Le Mans winners Emanuele Pirro and Yannick Dalmas, legendary Porsche engineer Norbert Singer, Yojiro Terada, a veteran of 30 starts at Le Mans, and Wolfgang Durheimer, head of motorsport at the Volkswagen group, as well as the respective presidents of the FIA and ACO, Jean Todt and Pierre Fillon.
Stalwart AUTOSPORT sportscar reporter Gary Watkins has been granted a place on the jury alongside other historical experts, including Herve Guyomard from the ACO's heritage department.
Watkins, who has reported on more than 50 24-hour races, said: "It is an honour to be invited to join the jury by the ACO. I am an inveterate list maker, so top-10s are just my thing."
The jury will sit on Friday morning to compile the final list of 10 cars.
Examples of these will then play a key role in a series of events planned in the lead up to this year's 24 Hours on June 22/23.
