Austin WEC: Timo Bernhard keeps Porsche ahead of Audi in practice
A late run from Timo Bernhard gave Porsche top spot in second free practice for Saturday's Austin World Endurance Championship round
The German jumped to the top of the timesheets ahead of Audi driver Lucas di Grassi with a 1m47.442s set late in the 90-minute night session.
Bernhard's time aboard the #17 Porsche 919 Hybrid eclipsed di Grassi's best of 1m47.684s in the fastest of the Audi R18 e-tron quattros.
Romain Dumas was third for Porsche, a further three tenths back with a 1m48.268s.
The second Audi was fourth fastest on a 1m48.818s in the hands of Benoit Treluyer.
The two Toyota TS040 HYBRIDs took fifth and sixth positions, Sebastien Buemi's 1m50.132s just edging the 1m50.224s set by Mike Conway.
Both Toyota received stop-go penalties over the course of the session for track limit violations.
Nick Heidfeld was fastest LMP1 privateer in his Rebellion-AER R-One with a 1m54.418s, but Simon Trummer was only two tenths behind in the ByKolles CLM-AER P1/01.
The G-Drive Racing squad set the pace in LMP2.
Sam Bird set a best time of 1m55.874 to top the class order ahead of KCMG and Signatech-Alpine.
Frederic Makowiecki was fastest in GTE Pro for the factory Manthey Porsche squad.
His 2m06.041s aboard the #92 Porsche 911 RSR was a tenth quicker than Davide Rigon in the best of the AF Corse Ferrari 458 Italias.
Viktor Shaitar was quickest in GTE AM in the AF-run SMP Racing Ferrari.
