Will Davison takes maiden pole
Holden Racing Team's Will Davison has taken his maiden V8 Supercar pole position in qualifying for today's first race of the Norton 360 Sandown Challenge at Sandown Raceway
Davison was fifth-fastest going into the shootout but put in a stunning lap to dominate the shootout, nearly four-tenths faster than his closest challenger and nearly six-tenths faster than third-fastest.
Starting alongside him will be Team Vodafone's Jamie Whincup, who was fastest heading into the shootout and was quick early on his shootout lap before fading towards the end of it.
The second row sees the Jim Beam Racing duo alongside each other, Steven Johnson just edging out James Courtney, with Fabian Coulthard in fifth just ahead of Craig Lowndes in sixth, less than 0.02 seconds behind Johnson.
Shane van Gisbergen, Michael Caruso, Russell Ingall and Todd Kelly complete the top ten, Kelly's chances of a quick time disappearing after locking up heavily into turn one on his shootout lap.
Just outside the top ten in 11th and 12th were Ford Performance Racing's Mark Winterbottom and Rick Kelly's brother Todd, the second FPR car of Steven Richards just behind them in 13th.
A couple of surprises to miss not only the shootout but the second leg of qualifying as well were Lee Holdsworth and Garth Tander. Holdsworth will start 21st after going off into the gravel at the end of the back straight and not finding enough pace afterwards.
Tander had an even worse session, going off at turn four before setting a particularly fast lap, and managing to find the small gravel trap which he was unable to exit from, bringing out the red flag, preventing him from taking any further part in qualifying.
