Whincup takes pole for second race

Team Vodafone's Jamie Whincup has taken pole position for the second race of this weekend's racing at Winton Motor Raceway

Whincup topped the times early in the session before Mark Winterbottom bumped him down to second. But Whincup went back out and set a 1:23.1687 to take pole position by nearly quarter of a second.

Winterbottom also went out again and improved his time, which enabled him to hold on to second just ahead of Craig Lowndes and Garth Tander, the three drivers split by less than 0.02 of a second.

Paul Dumbrell made up somewhat for a disappointing end to qualifying yesterday by setting the sixth-fastest time just ahead of Fabian Coulthard, with Lee Holdsworth, Rick Kelly and Will Davison completing the top ten, Davison's result much better than his 22nd in qualifying yesterday.

Just behind him in 11th is another driver feeling the same way, Shane van Gisbergen, who started down in 27th for Saturday's race. But other drivers went the other way, Michael Caruso 13th instead of sixth, Steven Richards 14th instead of second and Todd Kelly 17th instead of ninth.

Russell Ingall was another driver to suffer, starting 21st after qualifying 14th in Saturday's session for the first race.
