T Kelly wins, Skaife breaks record
Holden Racing Team's Todd Kelly completed a successful weekend for the team by winning the third race at Eastern Creek as teammate Mark Skaife set a record for wins
Kelly took the lead during the compulsory pit stops and never relinquished it, despite strong pressure from Team Vodafone's Craig Lowndes throughout the second half of the race, Lowndes just not quite able to find the space to make a pass despite lap after lap on Todd's tail.
A poor start for Mark Skaife which led to a third place finish meant race three was somewhat of a disappointment after winning the first two races.
However, it was still easily enough to guarantee him the overall round win, Skaife's 38th. By doing so, Skaife now has the record for most round wins in Australian touring car history, a record that had belonged to the late great Peter Brock. Todd Kelly's race three win also secured a Holden Racing Team 1-2 result for the overall round.
Team Vodafone's Jamie Whincup closed in on Skaife in the closing laps as the top four crossed the line covered by less than two seconds.
Behind Whincup in the order were the two Toll HSV Dealer Team cars, Rick Kelly in fifth having his worst race result for the year, while Garth Tander continued his recovery from the start of race two to take sixth.
It was a race for teams finishing in pairs, with Ford Performance Racing finishing seventh and eighth, Jim Beam Racing in tenth and eleventh and Supercheap Auto Racing in eighteenth and nineteenth.
Thanks to Tander's problem early in race two, Rick Kelly has 274 points and extended his lead in the championship from one point to 24 points over teammate Garth Tander. Jamie Whincup is third on 220 points, 54 behind Kelly, with Holden Racing Team duo Todd Kelly and Mark Skaife on 205 and 169 points respectively.
This means Holden drivers fill four of the top five places in the championship. However, Ford fill all the places from Craig Lowndes in sixth through to Will Davison in twelfth.
