The team believes the Altima's current aero base has too much drag, which is hurting its performance on the series' faster circuits.

Nissan's global head of motorsport Darren Cox told AUTOSPORT: "The Altima road car is actually quite slippery, so I think we went too far the other way with the race car aero.

"The series needs to homologate the Volvo aero over the winter, so our new package could be tested then too. I'm optimistic that it will get through."

Nissan introduced a new-spec engine for the Bathurst 1000 with a revised cylinder head design. It believes this has erased the power disadvantage it previously suffered from, leaving the aero as the main reason it struggled last weekend.

Its highest placed car of James Moffat and Taz Douglas was 18th in the race despite running problem-free.

However, Nismo boss Soichi Miyatani believes it is possible to extract more performance from the engine now his company is involved in the development programme.

"The current ranking is not really satisfactory, so we want to improve the performance of the engine," he said.

"So therefore I have allocated some resources from Nismo to do this development of the engine in collaboration with Kelley Racing. Next year I'm expecting some performance improvement."

Nissan has also ruled out supplying customer cars in 2014, but hinted at the possibility of a fifth car being entered in selected rounds next year.
