David Reynolds claims maiden V8 Supercars pole in Townsville

David Reynolds took his first ever V8 Supercars pole position as Ford Performance Racing dominated qualifying for race two in Townsville

A 1m12.5817s from Reynolds halfway through the 20-minute session proved sufficient to guarantee his maiden pole, ahead of fellow FPR men Mark Winterbottom and Will Davison.

The result was made even more significant for the title-chasing Winterbottom and Davison as points leader Jamie Whincup only managed ninth on the grid for Triple Eight - the reigning champion's worst starting position of the season so far.

Steve Owen - who led Saturday's race for a while - continued Dick Johnson Racing's Townsville resurgence with fourth place, ahead of Whincup's team-mate Craig Lowndes.

James Courtney showed breakthrough form as he claimed his best grid position of a tough season in sixth for the Holden Racing Team, seven spots in front of team-mate Garth Tander.

Tekno's Jonathon Webb and Brad Jones Racing's Fabian Coulthard fill row four, with Webb's team-mate Michael Patrizi joining Whincup on row five.

Stone Brothers Ford duo Lee Holdsworth and Shane van Gisbergen were notably out of position as they qualified on row nine, albeit just 0.6s off the pace.

Jacques Villeneuve continued to struggle for qualifying pace on his stand-in outing in Greg Murphy's usual Kelly Racing Holden. The 1997 Formula 1 world champion will start at the back of the grid again.
