Ambrose to make US switch

Two-time V8 Supercar champion Marcos Ambrose has announced his intention to race in the United States in 2006.

Having won the last two V8 Supercar titles after five successive years of the title being taken by Holden drivers, Ambrose is looking for a fresh challenge while attempting to secure a hat trick of titles this season.

"The V8 Supercar Championship is a fantastic series and has been very good to me,"said Ambrose.

"I have to thank Ross and Jimmy Stone, Ford and Pirtek for their tremendous support and hopefully we can all share some future success.

"While nothing has been finalised at this stage, it was important for everyone that my intentions were made clear before the start of the season so we can get on with the job of trying to win a third consecutive title.”

He is discussing several opportunities with Ford in the USA and hopes to have his 2006 drive finalised in the next few months. His expected destination is a seat in one of the three major NASCAR categories, with a drive in the Nextel Cup series his ultimate goal.

In preparation for the move, Ambrose will have a two-day test in a NASCAR Busch car in the near future, with further tests as his schedule permits.
