Carlin enters Euroformula Open series for 2016

Top single-seater squad Carlin has confirmed it will enter the Euroformula Open series in 2016, as predicted by Autosport

Formerly known as Spanish Formula 3 and the European F3 Open, the series uses the current Dallara F312 chassis and a spec Toyota engine.

Team boss Trevor Carlin explained that the cost-effectiveness of Euroformula Open made it attractive to his team, as well as the fact that drivers can use it as a route into European F3, where Carlin already operates.

"It's a championship that prides itself on being cost effective while maintaining a competitive package in this current climate," he said.

"It also offers a great platform for us to be able to work with drivers and provide them with a perfect stepping stone on their way to the FIA Formula 3 European Championship and beyond as they race around some of the top circuits in the world.

"We've received a very warm welcome from the championship organisers and we're looking forward to getting on track in the next few weeks."

Jesus Pareja of promoter GT Sport commented: "We are delighted to welcome in the Euroformula Open a team such as Carlin, which is one of the most respected references in our sports, and proud to see they have included the Euroformula Open in their portfolio of activities."

Euroformula Open champions include 2013 winner Ed Jones, who went on to race for Carlin in European F3 the following season and is now part of its programme in Indy Lights.

The series will run on the same bill as Formula V8 3.5 - where Carlin also has an entry - at six meetings this year, with Formula 1 venues Spa-Francorchamps, Silverstone, Red Bull Ring, Monza and Barcelona among the circuits visited.
