House of Lords debates UK motorsport

Baroness Peta Buscombe, the Shadow Minister for Culture, Media and Sport, has questioned the Government's approach over keeping Britain at the forefront of world motorsport in an hour-long discussion in the House of Lords this week

House of Lords debates UK motorsport

After the subject was raised in the House by Lord Astor of Hever, the president of the Motorsport Industry Association, Baroness Buscombe added her weight to claims that the plans of the Industry Secretary, Patricia Hewitt, lacked the necessary input from prime movers within the sport in the UK. The British motorsport industry is worth £5billion per year and employs over 40,000 people.

"It is important that Britain keeps its role as a leader in motorsports, as our once pre-eminent motorsport industry is under challenge from the USA, Germany, Italy and France," she commented. "It's true that the Industry Secretary is due to hold the first meeting of her Motorsport Competitiveness Panel on October 28, but I fear any action will come far too late to effectively support an industry already under major attack from abroad."

Baroness Buscombe added that key players such as the Motor Sports Association and the Motorsport Industry Association need to be represented on the panel.

"As trade bodies they represent the sport and the motorsport industry respectively, and are important to the future of motorsport in Britain," she said.

Lord Davis of Oldham, a Government spokesman on the subject, assured the House that the competitive working group "will consider such issues" and that a sub-committee could be set-up to represent the views of bodies such as the MSA and MIA in the future.
