BMP decides to drop PowerTour package
The PowerTour motorsport package will be dropped at the end of the season, ending its three years as the promotional umbrella for the British Formula 3 and GT championships
The initiative, run in association with Autosport this year, was started by the British Racing Drivers' Club as a means of improving the entertainment value of its flagship British F3, GT and National Saloon championships. The advent of British Motorsport Promoters, the group of circuit bosses that now controls much of the racing in the UK, took on the concept but has now decided to curtail it.
BMP has instead pledged a three-year commitment to British F3 and GTs, and says it will "maximise the television, sponsorship and all other commercial opportunities of both series". PowerTour has received extensive coverage in Britain on terrestrial TV's Channel 4 and satellite broadcaster Sky Sports.
Changes for this season saw the inclusion of Formula Ford and Fiesta championships from TOCA's BTCC package, the TVR Tuscan Challenge and a new-look Porsche Cup. From 2002, the support races will be the responsibility of the organising clubs for each meeting - namely the BRDC, BARC and BRSCC.
