Winston Cup even more gruelling for 2001
The NASCAR Winston Cup's reputation as motor racing's most gruelling championship took on fresh impetus with the release of an expanded 2001 schedule.
From the Pepsi 400 at Daytona on July 7th until the season-closer at Atlanta on November 18th, the good ol' boys will race on 20 consecutive weekends...
With the addition of the 1.5-mile Chicagoland and Kansas Speedways to the schedule, the championship will now consist of 36 points races. Two non-points races, the Bud Shootout at Daytona and The Winston at Charlotte's Lowe's Motor Speedway, bring the schedule up to 38 weekends of racing in the series already nicknamed 'The Divorce Racing Championship'.
Besides the addition of Chicago and Kansas, the only other real change to the schedule is the Brickyard 400 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway moving from its traditional Saturday to a Sunday slot.
