Vickers team win pit crew challenge
The crew of the No. 83 Red Bull Toyota driven by Brian Vickers won the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Pit Crew Challenge, beating the crew of the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Camry
The Red Bull crew were taking part in the event for only the second time after joining the series last year, beating their more experienced rivals with a time of 22.902 seconds, 0.109 seconds quicker than what the Gibbs crew took to complete a pitstop and push the car through the finish line.
"I can't say enough about this team," said the team's pit crew coach Greg Miller. "Words can't describe this group, the effort they put in day-in and day-out. It's all about them."
The winning team, which was formed by specialists and former collegiate athletes rather than mechanics or team personnel working at the team's shop, qualified for Thursday's event through the No. 83 car being one the best placed in the owners' standing among those not already qualified for Saturday's All-Star Challenge.
They set their fastest pitstop time during the quarterfinals with 22.655 seconds, although Jimmie Johnson's crew were faster also in the quarterfinals but were penalized three seconds for an infraction while changing a rear tyre.
There was also an individual contest for every position of the pit crew, awarding four different winners.
Caleb Hurd and catch-can man Jamie Frady from Jeff Gordon's crew combined to fill the car with 18 gallons of fuel in 10.031 seconds, beating the existing mark of 14.20 seconds. Also Eric Wilson, jackman of Kasey Kahne's car, also set a new record for his position.
