Sprint Cup practice also rained out

Rain has once again hampered proceedings at Martinsville Speedway, forcing the cancellation of both Sprint Cup series practice sessions on Saturday

Weather forecasts showed very high probability of rain for the afternoon, but eventually the rain dampened the track right at the end of the Camping World Truck Series qualifying session, which NASCAR was able to complete.

Officials waited in vain for the rain to stop but they were forced to call off both Sprint Cup series practice sessions, which means that drivers will start Sunday's race with just the hour and a half of running they were able to complete on Friday.

"I would have been pretty nervous if it rains all day tomorrow to start this race on Sunday just because things have changed," polesitter Jeff Gordon had warned on Friday following the cancellation of qualifying. "Competitors have gotten better, from an engineering standpoint you learn and you try and you push the limits to go faster, and Goodyear has changed the tyre."

NASCAR is expected to set a competition caution for the early laps of the race to allow teams to check tyre wear and degradation due to the change of track conditions following today's downpour.

Officials have postponed today's Truck Series race until Monday as rain intensified in the afternoon. The weather forecasts for Sunday continue to show improved conditions with partly cloudy skies expected and a 20 per cent chance of rain.
