Shawna Robinson's all-female pit crew - an admitted ploy for publicity by Texas Motor Speedway - performed admirably Friday night, helping her finish 18th in her first NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race
Robinson finished five laps behind winner Brendan Gaughan, but the seven women that made up the pit crew performed stops without major incident, assisting her advance from 32nd starting position to 18th place.
As one jaded fan observed, "They were far from the worst crew out there. Truth is, they were pretty darned good, especially considering they had never changed a tire or refueled a car under race conditions."
At first, Robinson didn't like the plan. After a brief preparation with the crew, though, she changed her mind. "I definitely don't want to call this a publicity stunt," said Robinson. "I know what kind of work they put into it."
Had it not been for a stop-and-go penalty for jumping the start, Robinson would have finished higher than 18th. She picked up several positions by going high as the green flag waved, but NASCAR officials made her come in for a penalty.
