Richard Petty re-signs Ambrose and Almirola for NASCAR Sprint Cup
Richard Petty Motorsports will retain Marcos Ambrose and Aric Almirola for the 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup season
Ambrose is entering his third year with series legend Petty's Ford squad.
The Australian has won the Watkins Glen Cup round for the past two seasons, and Petty is now eager to see him triumph on an oval.
"As everybody knows he's super-good on road courses, but there are just a couple of them and it's hard to just say, 'OK, he's going to win those races and that's it,'" said Petty.
"His big ambition is to win an oval track race. One week he's really good at it and the next week I don't know, but I think he's getting more stable with it and it's sort of a passion with him now.
"He knows he's decent on road courses, but he would really, really love to win an oval."
Almirola's fourth place at Martinsville last month is his sole top-five finish of 2012, but Petty said he was keen to give the Cuban-American another chance as this was the first full-time season of a previously episodic Cup career.
"We've seen a little bit of improvement in him every race," Petty said.
"This is really the first time he's ever been with a stable team, or with a team long enough to really get settled in.
"He's been at some different places, but he was just thrown in and ran six months or something, so he's never been stable."
