Qualifying: Pole for Newman

Rookie Ryan Newman, a rookie in name only, dashed to his fifth pole of the season Friday in time trials for Sunday's Pop Secret 400 at North Carolina Speedway

Newman averaged 155.836 mph for his fast lap around the 1.017mi oval, easily outrunning sudden sensation Jamie McMurray (154.540), winner at Charlotte, continuing as stand-in for injured Sterling Marlin in the No. 40 car.

Todd Bodine, his future in doubt, qualified third, followed by Mike Skinner and Mark Martin.

Among points contenders, leader Tony Stewart was 24th, Martin was fifth, Jimmie Johnson was 31st, and Newman, fourth in the ranks, is on the pole.
