Pruett tops road course warriors

Ganassi Racing's Scott Pruett was the top road racing 'mercenary' in the Watkins Glen NASCAR Winston Cup race on Sunday

Trans-Am ace Pruett finished second to series regular Robby Gordon, a former Champ Car racer himself, but his fellow road course experts struggled to score solid finishes.

"I could pace Gordon, but I certainly couldn't catch up to him," said Pruett. "We had a great car at Sears Point, and we got knocked out. We had a great car here last year and couldn't play it out. We had a great car here this year, and we got the most out of it."

Sportscar star Boris Said was disappointed in the manner his race was ruined, as Gordon tagged him into a 150mph spin.

"I had the best car on the track," commented Said. "I legitimately thought we had a chance to win when I went past Jeff Gordon and pulled away. I passed Robby on that restart, and going up through the Esses [Mark] Martin and the other guys were kind of racing and they checked up a little bit, so we were a little bit slower. Robby tagged me in the back exiting the Esses in top gear. I mean, it was a big spin and almost a huge wreck. Just by luck we saved it."

Ron Fellows, another sportscar ace, ran at the front for much of the day until he too hit trouble.

"I was quite comfortable just to sit there because I was a solid third," he said. "On the last pit stop we made a little adjustment to try and get the car to turn just a little bit better, and it would not turn left and began to vibrate. It got worse and worse, and then finally the right front cross member broke and I went off into the gravel."
