Points decide Glen grid: Labonte on 'pole'

Just 11 cars were able to get a lap in before rain showers halted, then NASCAR cancelled, the already postponed Bud Pole qualifying for the Global Crossing @ The Glen.

Bobby Labonte will start on the pole by virtue of team owner Joe Gibbs holding the top spot in the current 2000 Owner Points standings.

Places 1 to 35 were determined by owner points, so the remainder of the top 10 at Watkins Glen International on Sunday afternoon will be Dale Jarrett, Dale Earnhardt, Jeff Burton, Rusty Wallace, Tony Stewart, Ward Burton, Jeff Gordon, Ricky Rudd and Mark Martin.

While Rusty Wallace and Dale Earnhardt Jr will receive a 'break' of sorts from the decision to scrub the session, Mark Martin must be feeling as if the rain is falling directly on his head. Wallace and Junior crashed during the morning practice session and both will start backup cars.

Martin, however, was holding the provisional pole when the red flag was waved, after touring the 2.45-mile road course in a record breaking 72.441 (121.754 mph). The previous track record was set in August, 1996, by an injured Dale Earnhardt - 73.054 seconds, 120.733 mph.

Position 36 belongs to Darrell Waltrip with a past champion provisional and the remaining seven starting spots were filled through a drawing among drivers not otherwise qualified.

Lucky: Mike Bliss, Kyle Petty, Rick Mast, Ron Fellows, Stacy Compton, Robby Gordon and Todd Bodine.

Unlucky: Boris Said, who was fastest in the practice sessions that were completed, Brian Simo, R.K. Smith (driver of the #71 car of Dave Marcis), Brett Bodine and Scott Pruett.
