More problems for Mayfield

FONTANA, CA - As if the #12 Penske-Kranefuss team doesn't have enough possible problems in the form of NASCAR's fuel 'issue,' Jeremy Mayfield's winning Taurus of the NAPA Auto Parts 500 on Sunday was impounded by NASCAR officials some 3-1/2 hours after the race

More problems for Mayfield

During post-race inspection, the car did not meet the 51-inch height minimum, according to the 'height sticks' used by NASCAR officials.

Note to future NASCAR Winston Cup winners: Do not jump up on the top of your car in Victory Circle. Danielle Humphrey, NASCAR's Manager of Communications stated the problem could have been the result of Mayfield's victory celebration.

NASCAR impounded the Taurus and it is on it's way to North Carolina to undergo further inspection. Humphrey said Mayfield's win will stand, but that any possible penalties will not be announced until Monday, at the earliest.

The decision on the 'issue' with Mayfield's fuel from Talladega is expected to bring a hefty fine, quite possibly very strong penalties, if not suspensions. It is expected that announcement will be made on Tuesday sometime.

Mike Helton, Chief Operating Officer of NASCAR, said in a press conference held Friday at California Speedway, that the announcement would come this week. He would not offer any further comments regarding any penalties which might be forthcoming.

After waiting over two weeks to find out what NASCAR has determined will happen with the fuel, the team must now wait to find out what will come of this latest 'issue'.
