Mayfield extends deal
Jeremy Mayfield has signed a contract extension with Evernham Motorsports until the end of 2005, ending speculation that he was to be dropped by the team
After a slow start to the year, Mayfield has shown a marked improvement in form since Mid-August, and has scored two second-places and a third in the past seven events.
"Jeremy Mayfield remains a valuable asset to our organisation," said Evernham. "He and the rest of the Dew Crew have worked hard this year and have proven they have what it takes to contend for wins."
"Mayfield, who is 20th in this year's points standings, said: "Our team has pulled together, and we're beginning to show what we are capable of on a weekly basis."
Meanwhile, there is no firm word on the future plans of Mayfield's team-mate, veteran Bill Elliott, who according to rumours could run only a limited schedule next season. Elliott, who has just turned 48, has expressed weariness with NASCAR's exhausting 36-race calendar but has yet to declare his plans for 2004.
