Johnson: One Visit per Track

NASCAR Nextel Cup points leader Jimmie Johnson has called on organisers to abandon visiting tracks twice in the same season to allow the series to expand

NASCAR visits 14 of its tracks twice during the season, and the 38-week schedule means there is limited space for new events to break onto the tour.

Tight scheduling constraints mean that gaps between some races are small. There were only six weeks separating this season's 500-mile races at Pocono Raceway, Pennsylvania.

And Hendrick driver Johnson reckons that if NASCAR only visited each circuit once, the schedule could be expended to include mooted events in Canada and Mexico.

"I feel we can grow the sport by having just one race in every market," Johnson told The Toronto Sun. "If we only raced once at a lot of these tracks it would leave lots of opportunities to have a race in Canada, as well as other markets that we're not in now like New York City and the north-west.

"There is just not room for any added races. Right now we get just three weekends off a season.

"Everyone from NASCAR executives, to team owners, to drivers has been talking about coming to Canada ever since the Busch race in Mexico was such a success.

"There were worries about everything from safety to transportation problems when they went to Mexico and when it was so successful, everyone just turned their eyes north."
